Why this exercise

Teaches you to push your tempo without going too far. There is a big difference between playing fast and playing fast and clean, and this trains exactly that.

  1. Warm up for 2 minutes at yesterday's comfortable BPM.
  2. Pick any scale or pattern you already know well (chromatic, pentatonic, anything).
  3. Raise the tempo +5 BPM and play a short burst of 4-6 notes. Pause for 1 click, then repeat.
  4. If the first 3 bursts come out clean, keep going. If not, drop 5 BPM.
  5. Do at most 2-3 attempts at the new tempo in one session.
  6. Always finish with 2 minutes at the comfortable BPM, so your hand remembers what clean playing feels like.
Today's tip

Use any scale or pattern you already know well for the bursts.
