Why this exercise

This exercise trains both hands to work together. It helps every note ring out clean, without noise from nearby strings, before you try to play faster.

  1. Place fingers 1, 2, 3, and 4 on frets 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the 6th string. One finger per fret.
  2. Rotate the finger order each week: pick a different permutation so your hand does not get stuck in one setup.
  3. Finger permutations: 1234, 1243, 1324, 1342, 1423, 1432, 2134, 2143, 2314, 2341, 2413, 2431, 3124, 3142, 3214, 3241, 3412, 3421, 4123, 4132, 4213, 4231, 4312, 4321.
  4. Play each note exactly when the metronome clicks. 1 note = 1 click.
  5. Use alternate picking: alternate one downstroke and one upstroke (↓ ↑ ↓ ↑).
  6. Move to the 5th string and repeat the same thing. Keep going until you cover all 6 strings.
Today's tip

Play 1-2-3-4 on each string, 1 note per click. Aim for every note to sound clean.
