How to play it
Why this exercise
This exercise connects your technique to real music. It teaches you to make every note count, instead of just playing a lot of notes.
- Play the minor pentatonic scale in position 1, using quarter notes (1 note per click).
- Play one note LOUD, the next one SOFT. Keep repeating this pattern.
- Accent the first note of each bar a little more (every 4 notes).
- Add a half-step bend on the highest note of the phrase.
- Finish by improvising for 4 bars without thinking about the scale: just listen.
Today's tip
Play the pentatonic freely in quarter notes, paying attention to the tone of each note.
