How to play it
Why this exercise
This is where you apply the technique you have been practicing in a real musical setting. Free practice locks in what you have learned, sharpens your ear, and keeps you excited about playing.
- Put on a backing track, a loop, or just the metronome at 60 BPM, and start playing.
- Alternate between free jamming, practicing a new lick, and exploring an idea in your head.
- If a lick trips you up, practice it alone for a few minutes and go back to jamming.
- Don't chase perfection: aim for musicality, good dynamics, and enjoying yourself.
- Make a note (mental or written) of ideas you want to come back to tomorrow.
Today's tip
Start with 5 minutes of gentle warm-up, or revisiting something you already know.
