How to play it
Why this exercise

Improvising trains your ear and the connection between your brain and your fingers. Without it, you will always play only what you already memorized.

  1. Put on a backing track in A minor, or a key you already know.
  2. Start by using just 5 notes: the first 5 of the pentatonic scale in position 1.
  3. Play a 2-bar phrase, then LEAVE 2 bars of silence.
  4. Repeat the same phrase, changing 1 note each time.
  5. Once those first 5 notes sound musical, add more notes (up to 7-9).
Today's tip

Improvise over a backing track, listening to the music underneath.
