How to play it
Why this exercise
Learning a new lick expands what you can play. The more you know, the more freedom you have when improvising.
- Watch or listen to the whole lick 3 times before trying to play it. If it comes from a video, use Loop Practice to mark that section and loop it.
- Split it into 2 or 3 small pieces, 3 to 5 notes each.
- Play the first piece 5 times in a row with no mistakes, at 50-60 BPM.
- Join piece 1 with piece 2, and repeat it 5 times. Then add piece 3.
- Record yourself on your phone at the final tempo and compare it with the original.
Today's tip
Split the lick or solo into small pieces that are easy to memorize.
