How to tune your guitar

Press Start tuner and allow the microphone. Play one open string at a time and let it ring; the tuner shows the note and how far off it is.

If the needle is left of centre, the string is flat: tighten it slowly. If it is right of centre, it is sharp: loosen it. Stop when it turns green.

Always tune up to the note: if you go past it, loosen a little below and come back up. The string holds its tuning better that way.

Common guitar tunings

Questions

Is the microphone recording me?
No. The sound is analysed in your browser to find the note and is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere.
Why does the needle jump around?
Play one string at a time, let it ring, and keep the others quiet. Background noise or several ringing strings make any tuner unsteady.
Does it work with an electric guitar?
Yes, but an unplugged electric is quiet: hold the phone close to the strings, or play through your amp.
What is the reference pitch (440 Hz)?
It is the frequency of the A above middle C, and 440 Hz is the standard. Change it only to match a recording or another instrument tuned differently.
